Shanghai is composed of two syllables “Shàng”, meaning “Upon” or above and “Hǎi” for “sea”. Shanghai is, therefore, “Upon the sea”. The name dates back to as far as the 11th-century during the earliest Song dynasty. The city is located on the southern estuary of the Yangtze with the Huangpu River that flows through Shanghai, dividing it into two distinct parts: the Pudong meaning the part of the city located on the eastern of the Pu River and respectively, Xi meaning the western part of the City. The Puxi is the old and historic center of Shanghai while the Pudong is the new Shanghai with more than 400 above 300 meters high skyscrapers, all built after 1990. Shanghai is the city of records. With a population of around 25 million as of 2019, it is the most populous urban area in China and the second in the world. If Beijing is the center of the political power of China, Shanghai is its commercial and financial center, featuring a dynamic economy based on global finance, research, technology manufacturing and transportation. Shanghai containers port is one of the busiest in the world.

Sightseeing

Tourism is travel for pleasure or business; also the theory and practice of touring, the business of attracting, accommodating, and entertaining tourists, and the business of operating tours. Tourism may be international, or within the traveller’s country. The World Tourism Organization defines tourism more generally, in terms which go “beyond the common perception of tourism as being limited to holiday activity only”, as people “traveling to and staying in places outside their usual environment for not more than one consecutive year for leisure, business and other purposes”.
