Taiwan has an area of around 36,000 square kilometers, with mountain ranges dominating the eastern part and plains in the western part of the island. With a population of around 24 million, Taiwan is one of the most densely populated urban areas. Taipei is the capital as well as the largest metropolitan area of Taiwan. Other major cities include Kaohsiung, Taichung, Tainan, Taoyuan, etc. The settlement history of Taiwan dates to around 6,000 years ago, when Austronesian-speaking indigenous settled on the island. Between the early 1960s and the 1980s, Taiwan witnessed a fast and dynamic economic growth period as well as a political democratization process that led Taiwan from a dictatorship to a multiparty democracy. As a result, Taiwan opened to foreign investment and tourism.
With a diverse landscape shaped of mountains, plains, valleys, islets, and a variety of temperature zones, from tropical to subtropical, Taiwan has a lot to offer to its visitors and is well worth more than a short journey. Taiwan has nine national parks and thirteen national scenic spots to highlight its graceful and unique natural landscape. From the mountains and canyons of Taroko, through Alishan mountain to Sun Moon Lake, the East Rift Valley, and the coasts of Hualien and Taitung, everything here is a perfect joy for the eye and a breath-taking scenery that much resembles a heaven on Earth.
Taiwan´s culture is as colorful and diverse as its land. With different ethnic and multi-religious backgrounds, a multitude of languages and lifestyles, Taiwan is a harmonious cosmopolite society, and because of that, is nowadays, a highly praised and appreciated destination for all types of travel, except for its rich natural scenery, also for its famous culinary diversity. It is without doubt a kingdom of gastronomy, gourmets, and foodies.
Taiwan is nowadays a favorite travel destination across the globe. It is particularly popular among Muslim travelers. In 2019, Taiwan was ranked #3 by MasterCard-Crescent Rating´s Global Muslim Travel Index, in terms of providing a Muslim-friendly travel environment among the world’s non-OIC (Organization of Islamic Cooperation) countries. One of the assets that contributed to such a high rating is the availability made by Taiwan of prayer facilities in most of the major public places and transportation hubs, frequented by tourists.
