Vietnam, the Land of Ho Chi Minh

Hanoi, building, Vietnam
Hanoi, building, Vietnam

(Vietnamese: Việt Nam), officially the Socialist Republic of Vietnam is a country in Southeast Asia and the easternmost country on the Indochinese Peninsula. With a population of over 96 million inhabitants as of 2019, it is the 15th most populous country in the world. Vietnam shares its land borders with China to the north, and Laos and Cambodia to the west and shares its maritime borders with Thailand through the Gulf of Thailand, and the Philippines, Indonesia and Malaysia through the South China Sea. Vietnam´s capital city is Hanoi, and its most populous city is Ho Chi Minh City, also known by its former name of Saigon.

Quite many historians believe that Vietnam started to be inhabited as early as the Paleolithic or early Stone age. In the 2nd century BC, the Chinese Han dynasty annexed the ancient Vietnam, which made from Vietnam of the time a part of Imperial China for over a millennium. The first independent monarchy emerged in the 10th century AD, followed by successive imperial dynasties until France colonized the Indochina Peninsula in the late 19th century. Modern Vietnam became independent in 1945 and the country reunified again in 1976, after Vietnam took victory over France and US.

Through Challenges to a Bright Future

In 1986, Vietnam undertook a series of economic and political reforms that led to the integration of Vietnam into the global economy and politics. Though Vietnam faced serious challenges in its integration, it enjoyed a high GDP rate and ranked consistently among the fastest-growing countries. Tourism is an important element of the country´s overall economy. Vietnam welcomed around 13 million visitors in 2017 with an increase of almost 30% over the last previous year, making the country one of the fastest growing tourist destinations in recent years. The majority of visitors came from Asian countries as China, South Korea and Japan. Outside Asia, the biggest numbers of visitors came from Russia, United Kingdom, France, Germany, USA and Australia. The most visited destinations in Vietnam are Ho Chi Minh City, Ha Long and Ha long Bay. Vietnam is home to eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

Culture has developed over the centuries from ancient indigenous culture based on wet rice cultivation economy. It draws some of its current constituent elements from Chinese origins as Confucianism, Buddhism and Taoism are particularly obvious in the country´s traditional political system and philosophy.

Vietnam has a tropical climate which is dominated by the monsoon season, with a temperature ranging from 20 to 32°C throughout the year and an average annual humidity of 85%. Climate depends on regional weather pattern, however, 2 distinct seasons stand clearly out: a rainy or monsoon season, from May to October and a dry season, from November to April. The far north of Vietnam is mountainous with cool and dry climate in the winter, the central Vietnam is cool and rainy and the south Vietnam has constant warm climate
